search_paint_colors

search_paint_colors finds paint colours by name or code across all brands, for example “Hague Blue”, “SW 7029”, “agreeable gray” or “grün”. Matching ignores case and accents (“sniezny” finds “Śnieżny”) and every word may be a prefix. You can restrict the search to one brand. To match a hex value or a colour from another brand, use /mcp/tools/find-equivalents/ instead.

Cost: Free. No key needed.

Name Type Required Default Description
query string, 1 to 100 chars yes Colour name or code, or part of it.
brand string, max 60 chars no all brands Brand name, e.g. “Benjamin Moore”, “Farrow & Ball”, “Dulux”.
limit integer, 1 to 50 no 10 Maximum results.

One text content item holding a JSON object:

Field Description
query The query as sent.
brand The brand filter, present only if you sent one.
count Number of colours returned.
colors Array of colours: brand, brand_id, name, hex, lrv (light reflectance value, 0 = black, 100 = white), category, collection, code (when the brand has one), url (colour page on usemuro.com).
hint Present when count is 0: a suggestion for a better query.
note, partial_matches Present when no colour matches every word but some match part of the query. colors is then empty and partial_matches lists colours that match some of the words.
see_on_your_wall, data_source Attribution strings added to every free-tool reply.

  • If query is a hex value starting with #, the tool returns an error (isError: true) telling you to use find_equivalents with hex.
  • A brand sold in several markets (Dulux UK/PL, Sikkens NL/DE/IT, Beckers SE/PL) can return one colour per market.
  • Hex values are screen approximations. On the wall the colour depends on base, sheen and tinting.
  • If the database is unavailable the tool returns an error asking you to retry.
